What a joy to roam the streets with this electric Segway. Reagent, handy and offering more successful look: it has it all.
You've probably seen these strange objects electric roller mounted on two wheels and driven by a large telescoping handle. Although they are commonly called "Segway" - as we call "Caddie" carts hypermarkets - the names of these bicycles is "Segway". We received the test InMotion R1EX, a much smaller model (it weighs only 15 kg), two to three times less expensive (2300 euros) but also less versatile. However, the object does not disappoint us either way.
Impossible not to be attracted by the successful design of the Segway. The look is aggressive grille and fascia that surrounds the wheels so "low size" reminds us a little sport finishes some cars. A reference which is also found in its LED lights to the rear. Finesse, they seem inspired by German cars. Note also that these lights will automatically illuminate when braking and serve as indicators when turning the handlebars to the right or left. Only downside, if the machine "has the mouth" with his shriveled look, it is not able to get off the streets (even a boat) without catching the underbody. Similarly, the rise is downright impossible. It is compulsory to wear.
Wi-Fi Segway communicating with smartphone
The start of the product is very simple. It comes with Wi-Fi multifunction remote control. Primary role of this: turn the R1EX and then choose from the various modes available (assistance, learning or speed). We will return to them. This remote also has a dial that displays the speed and remaining battery life.
Wi-Fi is also provided to interact with a smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android). However, the application is still in beta and the version we tested proved to be unstable. But she already omen of fun things, like the ability to control the Segway from the touch screen smartphone. To be continued.
The manufacturer also sells a stand for tablet - 79 euros anyway! - To set the device to handle and use it as GPS navigation system.
The InMotion R1EX is a treat to drive
In the kind of two-wheeled "offset", electric bi-large who surprised us by its ease of handling. With R1EX is even simpler. Once standing on the product, it only takes a few seconds to find the balance point ... and it's gone. We look forward to advancing and we do the reverse to back.
Mode "speed", acceleration, rather frank (as is often the case in electric vehicles) can reach the maximum speed of the vehicle (15 km / h) faster. Reserved for travel on sidewalks, must naturally remain vigilant against pedestrians, but R1EX finally light enough (15 kg), shows a formidable agility.
Wheels gums give it a very good grip, avoiding unpleasant surprises in the zigzags and other emergency maneuvers. Adding that the braking is also remarkable: just pull frankly on the handlebars while also pressing frankly heels. Because the unit is ultra quiet, a horn is available from the wireless controller.
In practice, we also hope that there will be some tolerance, especially by the police, which will use on the bike paths. Indeed, we did and we finally feels more comfortable on this type of track in the mid-foot.
A Segway really suitable for all
If we found the subject very easy to tame, note that Gyrostep provides for a "drive" mode to get the hand. In this configuration, the R1EX is clamped at 5 km / h and it is almost impossible to be surprised. It is also very practical for kids. It was impossible to refuse the test for our young testers (4 and 9) too enthusiastic. If the problem is reached in a few minutes by the elder, it only takes about ten minutes to the youngest to take the hand ... that's how it's simple.
However, the manufacturer does not recommend using the product for children under 20 pounds. Moreover, the weight sensor in the present Gyropode transmits voice alerts if the user is too small. In contrast, the maximum weight to be observe a hundred pounds. Always on the side of the template using note that the handlebar is mounted on an adjustable telescopic handle 73 m to 112 cm from the base of the Segway (where one puts his feet). Make your calculation to know if you have arms long enough.
The "assistance" mode is the latest available. It activates the electric Segway assistance in pedestrian mode, to pull gently while walking alongside.
Two models more or less enduring
The R1EX is sold in two versions that differ only by their endurance. Indeed, the first model sold 2,290 euros, is equipped with a 4 Ah battery offering a range of 20-25 km. A second model, equipped with a 6 Ah battery, sold 2,490 euros, could roll between 30 and 35 km. It takes about 3 hours to recharge via a standard plug.
Gyrostep also offers many accessories on its website, such as a front bag (about 100 euros) or the "Joistick short. This replaces the classic handlebar system (see the third picture above our page) which allows you to control the machine with the knees, as if we skied. Equipment still quite expensive: 349 euros!
Difficult or impossible not to fall for the InMotion R1EX. Not only the design of the object is successful, but the simplicity of control, its size (about 50 cm wide) and reasonable weight make it a great vehicle for everyday life. So yes, at 2300 euros, everyone can not afford it, but the most affluent find it really great. Nevertheless, the manufacturer still has to work on its mobile app for free software product features. In any case, the object has had its effect in Labo 01net: 5 stars!
